Learn more on the county's FCPSOn page.

Students in grades three through six will be responsible for bringing the assigned laptop and power supply to and from school each day.  Please be sure to charge it at home each night so that it comes to school with a full charge.

Laptops assigned to students in kindergarten through second grade will remain in the classroom unless otherwise necessary.

It is also VERY IMPORTANT to take the following steps while your laptop is plugged into an electrical outlet.  This will help to ensure that the laptop works properly whenever it is needed.

  1. Restart your laptop at least once a week.
  2. Shut Down every night.
  3. Never use Sleep.

Opt-Out Form for School Issued Laptops

FCPS provides families the opportunity to decide what is best for their personal situation.  Those who wish to provide their own laptop in place of an FCPS issued laptop will need to complete and return a signed Opt-Out Form to their school’s main office.

If you plan to use a personal device instead of a school issued laptop, please print, sign and return the opt-out form to the main office.  It is available online in the following languages: EnglishSpanishKoreanArabicand Amharic.

It is important to know that FCPS laptops:

  • come with content filters, and several pre-installed shortcuts and bookmarks.
  • are supported by school tech staff.  There will be no support available for personally owned devices
  • are optimized and licensed to be able to use the software that will be needed for learning.

    A personally owned laptop:

    • must have a keyboard.
    • must be compatible with Google Apps for Education and Microsoft Office.
    • must be compatible with the school Wi-Fi.
    • will not be supported by FCPS employees.
    • may not have or be able to install some of the necessary FCPS instructional applications and content filters.

Know that smartphones are not an acceptable substitution for a laptop.

Note: “Due to the unknown and unpredictable security and support risks of exposing FCPS student laptops to foreign networks, out-of-country travel with an FCPS student laptop is not permitted.”

    Password Management

Learn what makes a secure password and how students can manage recover or change passwords.

    Create a Strong Password

Creating a strong password is an important part of your digital life.  Before creating a password view students can watch this video with a parent to learn how to create a memorable but hard to guess password.  Younger students can also view this video created by Stephanie Alger, the School-Based Technology Specialist at Fox Mill ES.

    Forgotten Passwords

If a student needs to recover or reset their password and they have previously setup an account recovery option then they can use the Account Recovery Tool.  This will send a recovery link to the email or cell phone that was selected by the family.

    Change Passwords

If a student needs to change their password for any reason, they can use the FCPS Student Password Self Service.  The Forgot Password link will only work if they have previously setup an account recovery option.

For the 2020-2021 school year, FCPS will extend passwords so students who remember their passwords will continue to use their current password throughout virtual learning.  Students should NOT change their password unless it was forgotten. The only exception is if the student is on-site and directed to change their password by an FCPS staff member.

If a student has forgotten a password and makes a change to it, then they will need to connect to FCPS Wi-Fi to sync their new network password with their FCPSOn computer. This can be done simply by driving through the bus lane or walking near the front door of an FCPS building with the laptop and connecting to the network. However, please note that a student can reset their password and use a personal device to continue with virtual learning without connecting to FCPS Wi-Fi.
