Distance Learning at Lees Corner ES
We hope all is well and we are looking forward to resuming our learning opportunities through Distance Learning on Tuesday, April 14th.
As we begin our Distance Learning journey together, please understand that our number one goal is to continue providing high-quality learning opportunities while maintaining positive relationships. Distance Learning is not the same as Classroom Instruction. We recognize the challenges our students, families and staff members may face in the upcoming weeks as we all adjust to this new way of teaching and learning. Here are few tips for families to help us all find success in this new environment:
Take a deep breath.
Be there for your child as a parent.
Continue to maintain family norms and be supportive.
Know that you are doing the best you can.
Celebrate your accomplishments and progress!
The following information will help guide us on our journey together.

Lees Corner’s Weekly Learning Activity Schedules
Each grade level team will create Weekly Learning Activity Schedules that they will shared with their students and parents.
Accessing Google Classrooms
Students will also need to access other learning opportunities by logging into their other FCPS approved accounts (ie. Google Classroom, Student Gmail and Wixie). They will need the student username and password which they use to login to their laptops throughout the year.
Student Email Accounts
Students may also email their teachers using their FCPS Google Suite for Education Gmail account. Note that student accounts are not part of the public @gmail domain. Students must use @fcpsschools.net after their username when signing in. If you click this FCPS Google Suite link or the browser bookmark from a school laptop the @fcpsschools.net will automatically appear and users will only need to enter their username.
To learn more specific information view the Google Suite for Education page of the FCPS website.
Live Video Sessions
Students will have the opportunity to meet with teachers and peers in large groups, small groups & individually using personal invitation links that will be emailed to each student's FCPS Gmail accounts. These invitation emails can be more easily found using this link. Students should be reminded not to share these links as they are part of their online identity and digital footprint. These links will be used during virtual synchronous learning times in the morning and the office hours in the afternoon.
To learn how to use the video conferencing tool we will use for our live video sessions, watch the Blackboard Collaborate with the Ultra Experience User Interface Tour video.
Connecting Your School Laptop to Your Home Network for the First Time
Before logging into the school issued laptop, click on the network icon in the lower right hand corner of the screen. Find your home network name and enter your network's password. These steps should connect your school issued laptop to your home network.
Distance Learning Packets
All students will receive printed FCPS distance learning packets in the mail. Families may choose to go paperless and access these resources on their own. For more information on printed learning packets and how to opt out of receiving these materials visit the Distance Learning Packets page of the FCPS website.

Where do I start?
Try starting with one thing, and if it doesn’t work out, try something different.
How will I teach my child?
No one expects you to do home-schooling. Your child may be your best guide as to when, how much and how often. Don’t feel like he or she is behind. The great part of this is that there is suddenly plenty of time to work at his/her preferred pace, to catch up, to work when and where he/she is most comfortable. Create a visible schedule so all family members know what is expected.
What if my student is feeling anxious and not ready or “available” for learning?
It’s not easy to suddenly have to coexist all day, every day, for the foreseeable future. Your child may need to build up his/her stamina for work, be patient. His/her emotional health is most important. He/she may need time to process what’s happening in his/her world. Give latitude to emotional outbursts; kids tend to “let loose” where they feel safest.
