A Heartfelt Thank You to Our Incredible Teachers

Next week is Teacher Appreciation Week! We are looking forward to celebrating the incredible school team at LCES!

Our staff goes above and beyond every day! They create engaging experiences that spark a love of learning in our children. They're patient mentors, offering support and encouragement when students need support! We pride ourselves on creating a safe space for students to share their worries and dreams.

Our staff actively seek ways to connect with families, building positive partnerships that help students thrive. We also appreciate the ways in which they create a welcoming environment, where parents feel involved in their child's education.

A big THANK YOU to all our amazing teachers and staff! Their hard work, dedication, and connection with your children are truly making a difference. We appreciate our LCES staff!! Connected, We Are Stronger!

Ms. Sloan and Ms. Hutchinson

Congrats LC Singers!

We’d like to congratulate the 6th grade students who represented Lees Corner at this year’s All-County Choral Festival. The students were selected by audition and then worked hard over several months to prepare challenging music. The festival was last weekend at Hayfield Secondary and featured over 600 singers from around the county. They presented a fantastic concert on Saturday. Our students did an amazing job representing our Lees Corner community! Congratulations to all of our LC singers!!

Let’s Go Band!!!

We are so proud of our 120 fifth and sixth grade band students who performed two assemblies and one evening concert yesterday!  They did a superb job performing for our entire school community and represented Lees Corner so well. The audience enjoyed listening to six different pieces of music, including Katy Perry’s “Firework” arranged by Michael Story, and even learned how each instrument produces its sound.  Hearing their progress was incredible.  We are all so proud of the hard work and dedication of our band students and our directors, Ms. Ammirati and Mrs. Hill.

Beautification Day at Lees Corner on Saturday, May 18

Lees Corner Elementary School invites you and your family to work with us beautifying the outside of our school.  This is a wonderful opportunity for students and parents to come together and enjoy a fun-filled morning focused on nature and giving our school grounds some TLC.  We will be planting flowers, having a nature scavenger hunt, and sharing some donuts at the end of the event.  Mark your calendars for Saturday, May 18th from 9am-12pm.  Older students may earn service hours.  All elementary children must be accompanied by an adult.  Please bring gardening gloves and tools if possible.   We hope to see you there!  Please sign up at the following link so we know how many people to expect:

April 8th Total Solar Eclipse

Dear Lees Corner Families,

A solar eclipse is happening on Monday, April 8, 2024. It's a rare and exciting astronomical phenomenon, and one that requires important safety reminders. Looking directly at the sun, even during an eclipse, can permanently damage your eyes.

Maintaining our priority on safety, LCES will not be planning a schoolwide, class, or group event for students to go outdoors to view the solar eclipse. Given the start time, students and staff will be provided with the NASA livestream link as an option to safely observe the eclipse.

Here's what you need to know about a total solar eclipse:

  • Don't look at the sun without approved eyewear. This applies to students and staff, and we encourage you to reinforce this at home.
  • Regular sunglasses are not good enough. The NASA website has more information about eye safety.
  • Eclipse timing: The eclipse starts around 2:04 p.m., peaks at 3:20 p.m. (which coincides with dismissal for LCES students), and ends around 4:32 p.m.

Given the timing, some groups will be adjusting the recess schedule or plan. Please remind your child to be especially vigilant about eye safety during dismissal. If you have concerns about your child walking or riding the bus home, please arrange for alternative transportation.

For more details, FCPS has developed the following:  FCPS Solar Eclipse webpage.

Thank you for your support!

VaRonica Sloan & Jennifer Hutchinson

“Kiss and Ride” Procedures

Kiss and Ride drop off begins at 8:35 a.m. and dismisses at 3:35 p.m..

  • Please always drive slowly.
  • Student must be picked up or dropped off only in the designated Kiss and Ride traffic pattern located in the parking lot on the cafeteria side of the school
  • No student should be dropped off or cross Hollinger Avenue to get to or from a vehicle.  Nor should cars make a U-turn in front of the school during arrival and dismissal.
  • No cell phone use/texting while in the Kiss and Ride lane.

April 8th Total Solar Eclipse

National School Social Work Week

March 3-9 is National School Social Work Week. We are so fortunate to work with Ms. Swittenberg, our school social worker! She is a wonderful support to our students and families! Social workers in FCPS help to prevent social, emotional, and behavioral factors from affecting a student's ability to perform at their best. Their primary goal is to remove barriers that prevent a student from fulfilling their academic potential. Social workers are assigned to every school and center in the school system. Learn more about the role of social workers in FCPS.

We hope this program builds self-confidence and improves fitness levels among our students and within the community. Everyone is welcome to join us!

Happy 100th Day of School!

National School Counseling Week!

This week, February 5-9 is National School Counseling Week. Thank you to Mrs. Jenny Spears and Mrs. Jasmine Polite, our LCES School Counselors! They do so much to support our school community! We had so much fun celebrating them and their work, this week! Learn more about the role of school counselors in FCPS.

Lunar New Year - Feb 10

Lunar New Year is one of the most important holidays among East and Southeast Asian cultures, including Chinese, Vietnamese, and Korean communities, as well as many others.

It is a celebration of the arrival of spring and the beginning of a new year on the lunisolar calendar, which begins on Feb 10, 2024 this year. The number of celebration days with different names varies depending on the country. China’s Lunar New Year is known as the Spring Festival, or Chūnjié in Mandarin, while Koreans call it Seollal and Vietnamese, Tết.

Lunar New Year is a celebration of community. During this time, families gather to eat feasts and practice cultural traditions.  Appropriate and welcomed greetings would be “Happy New Year!”  or “Wishing you health and prosperity in the New Year.”

Virginia Kindness Week: 2/11/24-2/17/24

Kindness Week is to recognize that simple day-to-day acts of kindness enable our schools, communities, and state to be a kinder, safer, healthier and more inclusive place to live, work, learn and play. Practicing and celebrating kindness is to look for the good, bridge connections across differences, restore hope, and empower people to make our communities strong and resilient.

Lees Corner will join in Virginia Kindness Week by promoting and encouraging various acts of kindness for students to participate throughout the week. We will be highlighting these acts of kindness on our morning news show! We also invite students and staff to participate in our school spirit day on Thursday, February 15th, “Kindness Ties us Together” where everyone can wear some type of bow or tie to represent their involvement in spreading kindness.

Chantilly Band Day Was A Big Success!

Many of our Lees Corner 6th grade band students went to Franklin MS on Jan 26th to collaborate with about 200 elementary students from Greenbriar West, Greenbriar East, Poplar Tree, Oak Hill, Navy, and Brookfield elementary schools along with some Franklin MS, Rocky Run MS and Oakton HS student volunteers.  Mrs. Hill helped to facilitate the event with every elementary and middle school band director in the Chantilly pyramid.  We are very proud of the work our band students accomplished as they represented Lees Corner. In one day, our students learned three new pieces of music and performed for families in our community.  We look forward to next year’s “Chantilly Band Day”!
